Two BME Alums Named to Forbes 30 under 30 List
Clarisse Hu Engr ’17, ’19 (MS) and Rebecca Rosenberg Engr ’22 (MSE) were recently named to Forbes List of 30 under 30 for the Class of 2025. This is the 14th year Forbes has recognized young leaders in North America across 20 different industries who are making a difference in business, culture, and entrepreneurship.
Hu was recognized in the Science Category for her work with startup Kubanda Cryotherapy, which she co-founded with Bailey Surtees Engr ’17, the CEO of the company who missed eligibility for the list by age.
The company spun out of a design team project focused on increasing access to care for breast cancer patients and has since expanded to include a wide variety of traditionally underserved markets. Today, the company has raised $2.4 million in funding and their devices are used in 18 veterinary schools, hospitals, and clinics across North America. Their minimally invasive cryotherapy system is commercially sold to veterinary practices to treat tumors at less than half the cost of surgery.
“Kubanda encapsulates my dedication to using science to drive innovation and passion for problem-solving to engineer equitable solutions,” said Hu. “I’m so grateful that the work I love has grown beyond what we could have imagined as students, commercializing our product and pushing to serve other marginalized communities.”
As founder of ReBokeh Vision Technologies, Rosenberg, a 2017 Johns Hopkins Center for Bioengineering Innovation and Design (CBID) graduate, was recognized in the Social Impact Category for her work to improve assistive tech options for people living with low vision.
Rosenberg experiences low vision herself because of albinism, a rare genetic condition that affects the body’s ability to produce melanin. Just because someone has low vision, it does not mean they have lost all ability to see. In fact, 85% of those with vision impairments have some usable functional vision. Rosenberg’s app helps users make the most of their remaining vision. Used in more than 115 countries and with $500,000 raised, the ReBokeh app uses a mobile device’s camera to augment what’s in front of you by adjusting contrast, colors, and more to create the best visual scenario for the user.
“I’m so thrilled, and so honored, to be a part of the 2025 Forbes 30 Under 30 list in the Social Impact category,” said Rosenberg. “Over the years, I have been constantly floored by the responses of the low vision community to our technology, as they continue to make use of it globally. It truly takes a village, and I’ve been so blessed that ReBokeh Vision Technologies, Inc. and I have had more than one.”
Following her selection to the Forbes List of 30 under 30 for the Class of 2025, Rosenberg was interviewed on WMAR-TV 2 where she discussed her friendship with the late Pava LaPere and the inspiration behind the ReBokeh app.
