Pashakhanloo’s Human Heart Image Wins Competition for Yearlong Cover on Nature Reviews Cardiology

Farhad Pashakhanloo’s image of the fiber orientation in a human heart was selected from among many entries to appear on the cover of Nature Reviews Cardiology for 12 consecutive months, appearing in a different color each month.

Pashakhanloo is a postdoc in the lab of Natalia Trayanova, Murray B. Sachs Professor of Biomedical Engineering. His image of the human heart, acquired using a novel methodology he developed, shows detailed fiber tractography of the whole heart from a patient with atrial fibrillation. It is reconstructed from in-vitro diffusion tensor MRI at sub-millimeter resolution obtained in a clinical MRI scanner with more than 60 hours of scan time.

The techniques used to obtain this image were developed as part of Pashakhanloo’s PhD research in the Department of Biomedical Engineering at Johns Hopkins University.
