The Johns Hopkins Biomedical Engineering graduate programs have, once again, been ranked No. 1 in the nation by U.S. News & World Report according to the 2025 rankings released today. This marks 33 consecutive years in the top spot.

U.S. News creates these rankings based on a survey of academics at peer institutions. Johns Hopkins BME has consistently ranked No. 1 for biomedical engineering graduate programs since U.S. News began ranking specialty disciplines in 1992.

“We are honored to be recognized as the top program once again. This achievement is a reflection of the hard work and dedication of our students, faculty, and staff,” said Julia Massimelli Sewall, director of the BME PhD program. “It underscores our ongoing commitment to nurturing exceptional graduates who will lead the way in biomedical research and health care innovation.”

As a department within the School of Engineering and the School of Medicine, Hopkins BME offers graduate students the opportunity to learn and collaborate with some of the world’s best clinical and basic research scientists. Students specialize in one of seven modern disciplines ranging from immunoengineering to biomedical data science, applying engineering approaches to understand and improve human health.

The Hopkins BME undergraduate program was also ranked No.1 in September. Additionally, several other engineering graduate programs within Johns Hopkins University have ranked among the nation’s best this year. Read more on the Hub.
