Jeremias Sulam, assistant professor in the Department of Biomedical Engineering, has been named a recipient of the National Science Foundation’s Early CAREER Award, which recognizes early-stage scholars with high levels of promise and excellence.
Jeremias’ award project, titled “Interpretable and Robust Machine Learning Models: Analysis and Algorithms,” aims to develop a general framework to interpret complex predictors in a robust and certifiable manner. The brittleness and lack of interpretability of recent deep models can often compromise the safe deployment of machine learning tools in sensitive domains, such as medical imaging. This project will develop algorithms to alleviate these shortcomings.
Sulam’s research focuses on machine learning, sparse recovery, and inverse problems in general and biomedical imaging tasks. Sulam is interested in the study of deep learning, its application to detection, classification, and other problems in biomedical sciences, as well as devising methods for the safe and responsible use of these tools.
