Hopkins BME undergraduate program once again No. 1 in the nation

September 24, 2024

In the 2025 Best Colleges rankings announced today, U.S. News and World Report has once again named the Johns Hopkins Department of Biomedical Engineering’s undergraduate program as the best BME program in the nation.

The department’s graduate program also ranked No. 1 this spring for best graduate programs in biomedical engineering, which marks more than 30 consecutive years with Hopkins BME in the top spot.

“Our impressive rankings reflect the hard work and great achievements of our students and alumni, as well as of our strong faculty and staff who dedicate themselves to student success,” said Eileen Haase,  the vice chair of academic programs and a teaching professor in the Department of Biomedical Engineering. “It’s always remarkable to see the ways in which our graduates go on to make a substantial impact on the lives of others.”

Home of the nation’s first trainings programs in biomedical engineering, Johns Hopkins has set the bar for BME education and research for more than sixty years. The unique curriculum is organized into seven focus areas, each built upon the major discoveries in a modern discipline at the forefront of  biomedical research.

A key principle of the undergraduate program is that students are practicing engineers from day one; beginning on the first day of their first year and continuing until graduation, students are challenged to solve real-world healthcare and engineering problems through project-based learning, research experiences, design opportunities, and clinical exposure. They work closely with faculty and actively contribute to the department’s mission of scientific discovery, innovation, and research that improves human health on a global scale.

Johns Hopkins University also advanced in the most recent rankings, rising to No. 6 among national universities—its highest-ever position in the U.S. News & World Report rankings of the nation’s best colleges for undergraduates. In addition to biomedical engineering, several other undergraduate programs within Johns Hopkins have ranked among the nation’s best. Read more about the rankings on the Hub.
