Student startup Relavo takes home $500,000 KidneyX prize

Relavo, a company founded by Johns Hopkins undergraduates studying biomedical engineering, has been awarded a $500,000 KidneyX prize to develop a product that reduces the risk for contamination during at-home kidney dialysis treatments.

The Howard Hughes Medical Institute has awarded three pairs of Johns Hopkins PhD students and their mentors a 2020 Gilliam Fellowship for Advanced Study, which not only recognizes students who have the potential to be leaders in their fields, but also is designed to advance diversity and inclusion in the sciences.

After the first client-owned dog received a partial corneal transplant in 2017, a team of Hopkins BME students and alumni developed a device to make it easier for surgeons to perform partial corneal transplants on dogs.
