BME Design Day 2024

BME Design Day is a celebration of student design and innovation. More than 50 teams of undergraduate and master’s students have spent the past year designing high-impact solutions to some of the world’s most pressing healthcare challenges.

Our undergraduate Design Team students worked directly with clinicians, observed medical procedures, and learned about clinical needs in the Johns Hopkins Hospital. Our master’s students traveled to India and Africa to connect with mentors that provided guidance for their global health projects. They also conducted clinical rotations at the Johns Hopkins Hospital for their U.S. healthcare innovation projects.

The Department of Biomedical Engineering has set the standard in biomedical design since introducing its landmark undergraduate Design Team program more than two decades ago. With the addition of our renowned master’s design program, offered through the department’s Center for Bioengineering Innovation and Design, more than ten years ago, biomedical engineering students of all levels are Engineering the Future of Medicine by developing new technologies to diagnose and treat disease.

At this year’s celebration of healthcare innovation, we are joining the Whiting School of Engineering for a school-wide Design Day. Dozens of undergraduate and graduate teams from every engineering department will present their solutions to real-world challenges. This year, biomedical engineering students are designing methods to monitor Parkinson’s disease symptoms, building tools to provide breastfeeding support, improving adoption of over-the-counter hearing aids, developing machine learning models to predict adverse post-surgery outcomes, making physician-patient communication more accessible, and more.

We are extremely proud of the work our students put into their design projects this year, as well as the outcomes that they have achieved. Thank you to all of the clinicians, faculty, mentors, and industry partners that have guided our students throughout the year.

We look forward to seeing you on Wednesday, May 1.
