Dr. Fijoy Vadakkumpadan awarded W. W. Smith Charitable Trust Grant

Dr. Fijoy Vadakkumpadan, Assistant Research Professor, JHU Institute for Computational Medicine and the Department of Biomedical Engineering, has been awarded a $100,000 W. W. Smith Charitable Trust Heart Research Grant. This grant was awarded to provide seed funding for basic medical research on heart disease, and to support unique and meritorious projects.

Dr. Vadakkumpadan’s will use this funding on a research project that aims to utilize computer simulations of cardiac arrhythmia based on image-based heart models as a noninvasive, economical, and risk-free alternative to clinical arrhythmia inducibility tests. The focus of the project will be on patients who have survived a heart attack. Clinical applications will be facilitated by the widespread availability of MRI and low-cost computing machinery. Dr. Vadakkumpadan is supported on the computational cardiac electrophysiology aspects of this research by Dr. Natalia Trayanova, Murray B. Sachs Professor of Biomedical Engineering in the JHU Department of Biomedical Engineering and Institute for Computational Medicine, and her research team. In addition, Dr. Vadakkumpadan also collaborates on this project with Dr. Katherine Wu, Associate Professor, JHU School of Medicine and Department of Medicine Cardiology.
