Five BME students receive Provost Undergraduate Research Award

Five undergraduate students studying biomedical engineering at Johns Hopkins have been selected to receive the Provost Undergraduate Research Award (PURA).

Established in 1993, PURA supports undergraduates as they pursue independent research, design, entrepreneurship, scholarly, and creative projects over the academic year.  With the help of a $3,000 fellowship, PURA recipients conceive and drive projects under the guidance of a mentor from any Hopkins division, center, or institute. Students will present their projects this spring at DREAMS, an annual celebration of undergraduate research at the Homewood campus.

The five students from the Department of Biomedical Engineering are:

Project: A feature-based approach to quantify motor activity in critically ill neurological patients using an unobtrusive wearable sensor matrix

Jialiu (Annie) Liang (Mentor: Natalia Trayanova)
Project: Parameters influencing arrhythmia inducibility in the post-myocardial infarcted (MI) heart arising from treatment with PSC-CM cell sheets

Dante Navarro (Mentor: Peter Searson)
Project: Using wearable technology to measure change in functional capacity following interventional pain procedures

Shivani Pandey (Mentor: Geran Kostecki)
Project: Development of an optogenetic system for point-pacing cardiomyocytes in vitro

Yueqi (Bill) Zhang (Mentor: Nicola Heller)
Project: Monocytes as cellular immunotherapy for allergic asthma
